Ex-Pupil of Dairy Flat School
My grandfather Richard Wilks went to Dairy Flat Primary many years ago, circa 1900-1905. With the lockdown I’ve got a bit more time on my hands and have been doing more research on my family history. Thought maybe, the school might be interested in a past pupil from 120 years ago.
Richard was born at the Wade Hotel, Silverdale in Feb 1895. Wilks Road is the site of the old family farm. When the first world war broke out in 1914, Pop signed up as a trooper for the 11th North Auckland Mounted Rifles, just 19 years old. The photo attached is from then. He was invalided off Gallipoli and sent back to NZ to recover. In 1916 he returned to serve out the rest of the war in the middle east. He got back to NZ in September 1919, married his sweetheart and had a long happy life.
